Idents [1]
UKTV is a partnership between BBC Worldwide and Virgin Media.

UKTV Style Gardens was launched on February 23 2005 at 1pm as a spin-off from UKTV Style. As its name suggests, the channel focuses entirely on gardening shows.

The UKTV Style Gardens identity, designed by Dunning Eley Jones and realised by The Hive, was the winner in the category Graphic Design - Trails and Packaging at the 2005 RTS Awards. The idents also won the Design Week Awards 2006 TV/Film/Video Graphics category, and were runner-up for Best of Show.

The four animated idents feature ordinary garden tools such as rakes, trowels and hosepipes, which are used to create well-known plants such as dahlias, passionflowers, dandelions and ferns. Stop frame footage of how different plants grow, unfurl from bud to flower, send out climbing shoots, or produce seed heads, provided the inspiration for the sequence directed by Jason Keeley at Dunning Eley Jones.

“We’ve all worked with the hive’s team members in the past, so we knew that they would be able to deliver the results we needed,” said Brian Eley, partner at Dunning Eley Jones. “Nevertheless, we were delighted with the way the idents turned out and were particularly impressed with The Hive’s ability to deliver the goods within such a tight deadline.”

Working to an extremely tight schedule The Hive’s Phil Hurrell did all the animation for the idents in Softimage XSI.

“The gardening implements are arranged to form the plants and animated in a plausible organic way. While it was possible to play with scale, we had to work within the constraints of how tools would behave in reality,” explained The Hive’s creative director, Phil Hurrell. “Creating a series of soft, delicate, living organisms from essentially inanimate, hard-edged tools was fascinating - and at the same time a perfect opportunity to come up with some really innovative ideas.”
