On November 01 2003, Sky Movies launched a new on-air look and some innovative services designed to guide viewers through the hundreds of choices available to them each day.
Key elements of the enhanced service rolled out in November 2003 included:
• 'About A Boy' free view: for the first time, non-movies subscribers were to be given the chance to sample a major Sky Movies premiere. 'About A Boy', starring Hugh Grant, was free to all Sky Digital and cable subscribers when it premiered on Saturday November 08 2003 at 8pm, as part of the 'Brit Hits Long Weekend'.
• 'Star Wars' multi-start: in a world first, on Saturday November 15 2003, Sky Movies broadcast a multi-start premiere, available exclusively to Sky Digital subscribers. By tuning to Sky Movies 3 and pressing the red button on their digital remote control, viewers were able to select a screening of 'Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones', at a time to suit them.
• 'World Cinema' strand: Sky Cinema strengthened its offering, with documentaries and special features - including a major Chaplin season in December 2003 - plus a significant new World Cinema strand, which in November 2003 included the UK TV premiere of 'Y Tu Mama Tambien'.
• New logo and on-air feel: this included a new graphic look - originated in-house - which reflected the mood of each upcoming movie to give the viewer a guide to next offering.
• Star-rating on films and new reviews: Sky Digital subscribers were now offered an independently sourced star-rating to Sky Movies' EPG listings and simpler movie descriptions, to give viewers a clear and frank review of every movie.
• New channel names: as announced in early-October 2003, Sky Movies dropped the Premier and Max sub-brands; resulting in the new channel names Sky Movies 1 - 9, Sky Cinema 1 & Sky Cinema 2.
Sky's director of films and acquisitions, Sophie Turner Laing, said:
"We are delighted to have reached five million movie subscribers. This milestone underlines Sky Movies' place as the world's biggest and most successful television movie service outside the US.
"With the introduction of these new features, we're now making Sky Movies even more accessible and enjoyable. The new features will give viewers a unique guide through the hundreds of movies on offer, enabling them to find one that matches their mood and reinforcing Sky's role as providing the ultimate choice of TV."
