Idents/Clocks [1]
The Computer Originated World (COW) arrived on our screens on Monday February 18 1985. The new ident first appeared at 7pm that evening, just ahead of the first weekday edition of 'Wogan'. The new look for BBC One coincided with the launch of a new schedule, including the first episode of the BBC's new soap, 'EastEnders'.
The Scottish version of BBC One was now referred to as 'BBC 1 Scotland'; a standard regional variant of the gold globe was used. 1985 also saw the introduction of the first electronically generated on-screen clock on BBC One Scotland and BBC One Wales. Although the ident and clock in Wales carried the title 'BBC 1 Wales', announcers there still referred to 'BBC Wales'.
BBC One Northern Ireland's branding remained unchanged. However, for a short period c. 1987/1988, announcers referred to 'BBC Northern Ireland'; the on-screen branding remained as 'BBC 1 Northern Ireland'.

When the COW was first introduced, teletext subtitles were carried on Ceefax page 170; subtitles later switched to page 888 on all UK terrestrial channels.

This was not a permanent move, and was largely dependent on which announcer or network director was on duty (announcers did quite a lot of the vision mixing in those days).
